driscoll on the church…what it is

The importance of the cross to the church is that apart from Jesus’ death on it in our place for our sins, the church does not exist and has no good news to tell.  Unless our sin is taken away, our new life as God’s people cannot begin.  It cannot be overemphasized that where the cross of Jesus is not exalted and proclaimed as the central act in all of history and in our own redemption, the church is not present.  Spiritually speaking, the church is the community of people who gather around the cross of Jesus to humbly repent of sin, trust in him, sing his praises, and follow his example. – Mark Driscoll, Vintage Church

As indicated, the following quote is from Mark Driscoll’s Vintage Church (2008).  In speaking of the fundamental and central aspect of the church, Driscoll goes to the cross, considering it the defining aspect of the church in the world.  He says that apart from it the church has no gospel.

-What are your feelings about the quote?
-Is the cross the most important aspect of the church?  Apart from it, is the church want of good news?
-Would you add or take anything away from Driscoll’s exposition?

Cheers.
